Choosing the right lampshade can be tough, but there is more to consider than picking the right colour for your home. Here are our top tips to choosing the right size and shape lampshade to suit your lamp.
First, choosing the right fitting.
The majority of our lampshades are fitted with a duplex ring. This is a large ring just inside the top of the lampshade and is used for carriers so the lampshade is more versatile. A lampshade with a duplex ring can be used for both table lamps and ceiling pendant if you have the right carrier.
What carriers can you choose from?
UK/EU shade carrier
This carrier is used for table and floor lamps. It features an E27/E26 lampshade ring plus an adapter for B22 size lampholders. The carrier is secured to the lamp using a lampshade ring. The lampshade is placed over the top and the duplex ring rests within the ridges or the carrier.
UK/EU ceiling spider/carrier
A ceiling spider also features a shade for E27/E26 and an adaptor for B22 lampholders. The spider is fixed to the pendant light using the lampshade ring. The duhe dplex ring of the lampshade rests on the arms of the spider.
Choosing the right lampshade for a table lamp
There are three things to consider when choosing a lampshade for your lamp.
1. The lampshade width is the same as the height of the lamp to create a balance, proportional look.
2. The width of the lampshade is wider than the widest part of the lamp. Usually, the lamp should be 50% of the width of the shade.
3. The height of the lampshade is 2/3 or 40% of the height of the lamp.
These three tips should help guide you in choosing the perfect size shade for your lamp.
In general, we offer shades from 12″ wide to 22″ wide.
Choosing the right size lampshade for a floor lamp
It is recommended that the lampshade height is 1/4 or 25% of of the height of your floor lamp.
In addition, you want to consider the space where your floor lamp is placed. A lamp lampshade that is too small may not provide enough light but a lampshade too large may overwhelm the lamp and your space.
Choosing the right size lampshade for a ceiling light
Similarly to floor lamps, you need to consider the space where the lampshade is placed. If you have a small room then a lampshade that is too large will stick out like a sore thumb.
We recommend measuring the desired width in the space to determine a size that is balanced. Then consider the style and shape of the lampshade within your space so you choose something that suits your design style.
